History

About Chactela:

  • Centro Chactela is in Guatemala.
  • This area has no high school
  • The people are the Maya Q´eqchi, (indigenous) who do not receive much help from the government, mainly inhabit most of these villages.
  • The people live in poverty
  • Education in Guatemala is only guaranteed to grade six
  • There is no educational funding available for youth after grade six.
  • After grade six the family must provide the necessary funds, textbooks and school supplies
  • Most families cannot afford to send their children to school
  • The youth who want to continue their schooling after finishing primary school leave their villages and travel to another area in Guatemala. They must not only secure accommodations and pay room and board but be able to afford the school fees and buy all necessary school supplies.
  • The children have no access to a library, computer room, or to a modern day gym.
